Q- What are soaps made of?
A- We use a special blend of plant based oils created to maintain a hard, long-lasting, gentle and moisturizing bar of soap. Our blend includes; olive, sunflower, palm kernel, soybean, hemp seed, almond and avocado oils. Depending on the soap, we may also add some "butters" like; mango, coconut, Shea and hemp seed. These blends are tailored to a specific soap, so each batch may vary slightly depending on the characteristics we want the soap to have.
Q- Do you use lye?
A- Yes. Lye is an essential part of soapmaking. When lye is introduced to oils a chemical reaction occurs that changes the molecular structure of the oil into a soap! It's a facinating process that has been traced back as far as 1550 BC Egypt!
Q- I've heard that lye soaps are harsh on your skin, is that true?
A- In some cases, yes. In our case, no. We measure our lye very carefully to ensure that only enough is added to turn the oils to soap. Then we cure our soap for several weeks to allow the PH of the soap to come down. Most lye soaps have a PH of 8-11, our soaps test between 6 and 8. In some cases they test even lower. We strive to ensure that are soaps are gentle.
